Dubstep Meets Tradition: Kromproom & Centurio Remix the Legényes Dance in "Danced with a Robot"

Kromproom feat. Centurio - Danced with a Robot (Dubstep Remix of A Legényes)

While on vacation in Hungary, Piotr "Kromproom" Krompiewski stumbled upon a folklore festival, where he captured a traditional men's solo dance called legényes on his mobile phone. Upon returning from vacation, Kromproom decided to overlay the footage with the dubstep remix track “Danced with a Robot,” taken from the maxi-single of the same name. Although the video wasn’t intended to be an official music video for the track, the spontaneous combination of the dance and the music resulted in an intriguing fusion of modern dubstep with traditional culture.

The legényes dance, which inspired Kromproom, is a freeform men's solo dance performed by Transylvanian people, both ethnic Hungarians and Romanians. While usually danced by young men, it can also be performed by older men. The dance is performed freestyle, typically with one dancer at a time moving in front of the band. Meanwhile, women stand in lines to the side, singing or shouting verses as the men perform. Each dancer typically performs 4 to 8 unique dance phrases without repetition, making every performance a distinct experience.

What Makes the "Danced with a Robot" Remix Special?

The blend of traditional dance and modern dubstep created an artistic expression that feels both rooted in cultural history and avant-garde in sound. The dubstep remix, which Kromproom collaborated on with Jens Esch (Centurio), adds a cutting-edge, electronic dimension to the raw energy of the legényes dance.
